I had to cover our layout to keep customers from trying to buy the tiles :)

Tiles: the Next Generation

July 26, 2021

The List, she is long.

So, we’re back in session, currently unmasked with a fully vaccinated studio. We have a great bunch of new students as well as our returning family. We’re running at full capacity, but still maintaining our small studio status. The weather has been terrible, but our AC is keeping up and our great lighting always keeps the studio cheery.

I’ve been slowly assembling my last batch of slip poured pot parts and, as always, getting to projects on my long list. We installed the gallery front step with this year’s community and slip-poured tiles. More on that here! Once the tiles were laid out for the step, I started gluing the rest to our studio stairwell wall. This wall will have many of our student-made tiles from over the years as well as more of the community tiles. I also inadvertently left a couple of tiles for future archeologists through a crack in the wall. Oh well. I tried a reacher-grabber tool but couldn’t quite fit it in there and I’m not about to take apart the wall for two tiles. If someone has a better idea, have at it. I can offer gratitude and espresso.

In the meantime, I’m out of a couple of important colors for the scheme AND blank tiles for the community painting kit, so I’ll be working on that this month, along with some pretty pottery to fill out the shop. Christmas is coming! I’m also happy to be on the wheel alongside students who are scheduling private lessons. It’s a fun format and I like the chance to explore whatever forms they happen to be working on. For anyone keeping track, I tend to not spend too much time on the wheel at any one time - I’ve had a fussy back from an old injury for a while now, so varied tasks are my ticket to keeping it happy. Slip pouring mixed with hand building and wheel throwing (and building maintenance) and just plain sitting around kvetching keep everything in balance. Never underestimate a good kvetch.

So fun! We can use more of the funkier tiles here.

I love that we captured time here. A lot of happy suns and hearts were painted on sunny pandemic afternoons
