The Queen Conch

September 21, 2024

Again with the Caribbean theme? I guess so!

I’ve been searching for this mold since I started dabbling in slip casting in 2020. I found it once, but it was packaged badly and arrived in pieces. I finally found it again with some help on eBay, and here she is! A little bit of a learning curve to the pouring and releasing, but SO beautiful!

What to do with a conch? I’ll probably make it into an instrument, I do plan to stick things on it like miniature cherubs and the new (antique) lizard below. It’s designed to be a planter as well as a soup tureen (I have to find the lid mold next), so I’m guessing Her Royal Highness will have many functions.

Fun fact: The queen conch is the only conch that makes pearls, and beautiful pink ones at that (the reason for the last picture - it’s actually a doll eyeball mold, but today it’s conch pearls). It’s the largest of the conch family and also endangered. So no real conches shall be harmed in this endeavor!
